Work Package 3: Attuned to Trauma

Where are we?

(Last updated 24/04/2024)

Workshops in Kent, Cornwall, Leeds have now been completed in a range of services and also school settings. Thank you to all those who have taken part.

For the next stage of WP3 we are looking to launch the public health resource that stakeholders have helped us to create in these settings across England, this is likely to be in the summer of 2024.  We are so grateful to all those who have taken part.

We would also like to thank the NIHR OXTV ARC and Participatory Research Seed Fund from The University of Oxford’s Medical Science Division for additional funding for this work.

What did we learn from the co-design process?

In workshop 1, young people said that invalidation is a common part of their lives. It hurts and harms them.

“It makes things even worse”

They said that invalidation mostly happens in what someone says or does not say or what they do not do for you.

Invalidation signals to a young person that they:

  • are not okay

  • their feelings or thoughts are not sensible

  • their needs are not realistic or important

  • that fundamentally their right to exist as they are in this moment is a problem to us

What is the resource?

How does the resource align with a trauma-informed approach?

The resource will include three key components; tools to stimulate and nurture creative conversations such as creative materials in additional to cards that give examples of prompts that individuals can use within their settings. The second element of this resource will include the use of Forum Theatre which will include the ability to watch role plays (generated by Attune research team) and learn examples of good validation. These resources will be kept within each setting to use over time as is appropriate.

Individuals at our workshops told us that being validated is really important to them and their wellbeing. Being invalidated can cause hurt and upset, and is when others do not acknowledge their feelings. Validation can be in the form of words, body language, space and time.  Our resource encourages individuals to value, support and consider what others may have experienced in life when interacting with one another.
